Post Literature Review

1st of all, i was totally smitten by the lyrics of 深白色 i read last nite. so much so the the idea warped into 银白色 when the morning comes, along w a familiar melody dat had been ringing in my mind since i read the lyrics.

only to find out later my hunch was rite, dat the melody was indeed from a much less known song by sammi which i had bothered to listen only a few wks back. however, the melody was not totally the same, cos i only remembered fragments of it, so i claimed the end pdt mine lor.

aniwaes, cos i started writing the stuff w/o the melody, i had the flexibility of writing a poem, so i added a lot of hidden meanings and such. and amazingly, the end pdt also fit into the melody i came up w.

dun tink will write the meaning explicitly, cos it's also up to the interpretation of 3rd parties... ;P

New Poem

like the last time, spent an ultra short time on it: 2hrs. but of cos, dis is really 80% of poem and the melody is for entertainment and to explain y the poem was structured dat way. tried to incorporate the very essence of depression, ha...

yup, and the inspiration came after listening to the original song by sammi and the original title was actually 《四面楚歌》, which explains the 6 directions in the song. but well, i tot such a title will give the wrong impression of contents closer to the on thing in the lyrical industry of going chink (and btw, i juz juz gave a name for the accent/way of speaking english for PRCs: chinglish), so i gave it a more direct, proper name lol

Re: Hike in NUS Tuition Fees

I refer to the announcement from NUS and NTU to increase tuition fees for the coming academic year. In the news on the 14th, a student who was interviewed agreed totally to the increase, but I must say that this is definitely not the view of the general student population of NUS.

I am here speaking in the capacity as an NUS student, who, as an ignorant small fry, find it hard to convince myself that the increase is just.

First of all, there are many ways to balance the books and it is definitely not by increasing the fees paid by end-consumers. There are many local corporations out there who managed to cut costs effectively without increasing the burden on the consumers. I do not understand how an institution of acclaimed academics could be incapable of driving operating costs down.

If the budget is tight, why do I keep seeing new buildings that I rarely visit? How many students have been to the University Cultural Centre more than twice a year? How many people have been to the spanking new University Hall? In addition, why are there ongoing renovations to seemingly new structures?

If the budget is tight, shouldn’t the authorities cut costs by cutting salaries of their employees? Up till now, there is no news from NUS that such a measure has taken place to ensure that costs are kept low. Similarly, air conditioning is everywhere: in empty lecture halls, empty seminar rooms and open corridors. Is there a need for such extravagance?

Another reason why I as a student am opposing to the fee hike is that students are already paying a lot of extra money to supplement our studies in NUS. We pay for our textbooks, the printing of our notes, buying of tools, our lodging, transportation and the list goes on. I do not understand why I pay nearly 50 times more than I did in JC to do 10 times more of the work I used to do.

And I find it an irony that the school is putting aside $3million for grants and bursaries for needy students. What is the use of increasing the fees in general and then subsidizing a minority? Frankly speaking, the crux of the problem is that the student population has no idea where the allocated amount for grants and bursaries has gone to.

According to my knowledge, foreign students are also entitled to the grants. In fact, most of the foreign students I know are receiving such student grants. Many people are complaining about the hike in the population of foreign students in NUS, such that many of us believe that the hikes in tuition fees have actually gone to ‘importing’ more of these foreign talents. This sounds naïve, but it’s the general notion brought up during casual talks.

Perhaps it’s the uncertainty of the whole affair that makes me reluctant to accept the hike in fees. What with the recent incident of NKF, there seems to be a similarity between university authorities buying $2000-a-pc worth of chairs for professors to the installation of golden faucets; there seems to be a parallel between salaries for lecturers and peanuts for the CEOs (in co-relation to the amount of productivity seen to come from them). Can NUS provide hard evidence to justify the increase in fees? Best of all, can MOE step in to pacify the student population? After all, it’s the money of tens of thousands of non-working students we’re talking about here.

My Newest Theme Song

dear fren finally passed me the MayDay CD which contains the song dat i considered will my very own theme song for days to come. i tried d/l from the net, but wat i got was usually the radio-recorded quality version dat sux big time. now, i haf the original song in the gd 128kbps version.

and the song is called 《倔强》.

on dat day when i sang it in ktv w ziwei, i knew at once dat song was written for me. i dunno abt others, but as i went thru the lyrics verse by verse, i found dat almost 99% of the lyrics was describing abt me and my feelings. it was as tho i was reading my own tots written in lyrical format!

i mean how many ppl r like me, who has my own world where i'm the almighty zenov? where i can tell ppl dat i do wat cos i want to do it... and yes, by biggest worry is dat i mite gif up my own dream...

i was super impressed, and decided dat dis song shall b my Theme Song and one i can use to motivate myself in the future. =)

New 'Poem'

hehe... decided to call my works as poems instead, haha... 新诗, tho i dun really noe the real definitions and criteria of poems.

amazingly, i finished the poem within 2 days, 2 days after my sadded entry on 20-something nov, w minor corrections over the past few wks. dis has gotta b my most optimistic works ever, cos it's celebrating the wonder of frenships. still, as usual, it's peppered w some sad tots.

actually, i based the poem on the melody of fish's 《花园》, but somehow, maebe cos it felt rushed, the words dun fit the melody dat well. and i dun feel like doing major changes to it, partly cos i'm lazy, partly cos i feel dat the way it is does well.

and of cos, as usual, it has double meaning. tho i dun blame those who can't see the link. but for those (i expect only 1, u noe who...) who understands, yes, dis poem is a tribute to the person whose name is used in the poem. commemoration. tots i would haf yrs ago at dat pt of time.

hmmm... one more pt, dat is, it holds the theme of 珍惜眼前人, agree?

which is y i prefer to call it a poem too, cos it sounds awkward singing it out, tho, if reading it seems too boring, it has the melody of 《花园》 to sing along to.

btw, for the prev lyrics, called 《冷叶的冷夜》, it was based on S.H.E's 《侯鸟》. waha... unexpected rite? i sorta like the combination of the lyrics w the tune. even more trivia, i've classified dis present poem as a prequel to 《冷叶的冷夜》. woohoo!
